Structure-Aware Halftoning Using the Iterative Method Controlling the Dot Placement

Many image reproduction devices, such as printers, are limited to only a few numbers of printing inks. Halftoning, which is the process convert continuous-tone into binary one, is, therefore, an essential part printing. An iterative halftoning method, called Iterative Halftoning Method Controlling Dot Placement (IMCDP), has already been studied by research scholars, generally results in halftones good quality. In this paper, we propose structure-based alternative algorithm that improves halftone quality terms sharpness, structural similarity, and tone preservation. By employing appropriate symmetrical non-symmetrical Gaussian filters inside proposed it possible adaptively change degree sharpening different parts image. This done identifying dominant line neighborhood each pixel original image, utilizing Hough Transform, aligning dots along line. The objective subjective assessments verify method not sharper halftones, giving more three-dimensional impression, but also similarity adaptive nature makes be further developed 3D could adapted object exploiting both structure images being mapped geometrical underlying printed surface.
